Arriving in Sri Lanka

The main international airport in Sri Lanka is the Bandaranaike International Airport, located in Katunayake, just outside of the capital city, Colombo. Many airlines operate direct flights to Sri Lanka from destinations large and small all around the world.

There are two things you need before entering Sri Lanka’s borders:

  • 1. A Valid Passport
  • 2. A Tourist Visa

A Tourist Visa costs $50USD. This can be obtained in two ways:

Online before your arrival: https://www.eta.gov.lk/slvisa/visainfo/center.jsp?locale=en_US

Apply online on the Sri Lankan Government’s website prior to your arrival.

Once you have submitted the correct documents and information you can pay for your Visa and await an approval email.

Once your Tourist Visa approval email is received you can show this to the immigration authorities upon arrival.

Obtain one on arrival: Apply for a Tourist Visa at the airport for a higher fee. It’s important to check the visa requirements before you travel to ensure you have the necessary documentation. This information on entry requirements can be found on the Sri Lankan Government’s Website.

Tip: When paying for your Tourist Visa, 30 Days and 180 Day stays cost the same amount. If you are considering staying longer, it’s a much better option to buy the 180 days. Sri Lanka can really have you not wanting to leave.

Once you arrive at the airport, there are many options for getting to your destination within Sri Lanka. All for an affordable price. Taxis and private transfers are readily available at the airport, or you can take a public bus or train to your destination.

For first-time visitors, it is recommended to use a reliable taxi or transfer service, as the public transportation options in Sri Lanka can be very crowded and chaotic.

The best place to spend the first night is right by the airport in the beachside town of Negombo. Rather than stay close to the bustle of Colombo, It’s much easier and nicer to ease into your first night by the Beach.
